Upon the conclusion of the last-16 stage at the Women’s World Cup Down Under, 11 Chelsea players have advanced to the quarter-finals, which get underway on Friday.

19 Blues were called up across nine different nations ahead of the tournament starting last month, and 13 of those progressed to the last 16 where an action-packed round of fixtures threw up a mixture of drama, excitement and surprises.

By far the most impressive individual performance came from Zecira Musovic. She made 11 saves, a single-game World Cup record for a goalkeeper who kept a clean sheet, as Sweden knocked out defending champions the United States on penalties to secure their place in the last eight.

Let’s take a look at our remaining Blues at the tournament…

Friday

Aniek Nouwen made her World Cup debut for the Netherlands during a 1-1 draw against the United States in Group E. The Dutch defender was among the substitutes for their last 16 victory over South Africa, setting up a quarter-final against Spain in Wellington on Friday with kick-off at 2am (UK time).

Both Japan and Sweden boast 100 per cent records at the tournament so far. Musovic and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd have been influential for Sweden, while Japanese forward Maika Hamano is waiting to make her World Cup debut. The teams will meet in Auckland on Friday with kick-off scheduled for 8.30am (UK time).

Saturday

Australia saw off Denmark to reach the quarter-finals and Sam Kerr made her first appearance of the tournament, much to the delight of the Matildas faithful. They will take on Eve Perisset and France in Brisbane on Saturday, with kick-off set for 8am (UK time).

England required penalties to overcome an inspired Nigeria in the last 16. Hannah Hampton, Millie Bright, Jess Carter and Niamh Charles are in the squad to face Colombia on Saturday in Sydney, with kick-off set for 11.30am (UK time). Lauren James, however, will sadly miss out through suspension.
