On 1 July 2024, a new Chelsea era began. After 12 years of working under Emma Hayes, the team would now be led by Sonia Bompastor, a coach who had spent 14 years as both a coach and a player at Lyon.
It was as much a change for Bompastor as it was for Chelsea.
Bompastor immediately discussed implementing her game model at SW6.
She had clear expectations of her players in training, and she worked at a high intensity, building on the winning mentality that was already present in the squad. She paid attention to small details and created a family environment.
In our interview with the coach at the end of the season, Bompastor told us she felt like part of the Chelsea family from the start.
Any doubts over whether she could succeed were swiftly set aside as the team carried on in the same vein as they had under Hayes: winning.
Here are 12 facts from Bompastor’s domestic Treble-winning first 12 months at Chelsea.
12 things from 12 months of Sonia Bompastor
99 – The number of goals scored by Chelsea in all competitions under Bompastor.
36 – The number of starts made in all competitions by captain Millie Bright, the most of any player in Bompastor’s first season.
92 – Bompastor oversaw some late winners in her first season at Chelsea. Lauren James’ winner against Everton, clocked officially at 92 minutes and three seconds, was the latest ever goal in WSL history. Erin Cuthbert then scored in the 91st minute against Manchester City in March, meaning we had scored two winners in added time in four outings in the WSL, as many as in the previous 199 league games.
18 – The number of Chelsea players to have scored under Bompastor.
34 – The number of games won in all competitions in Bompastor’s first season in charge – the most ever by a Women’s Super League side in a single campaign.
6 – Chelsea won six consecutive Women’s Champions League group stage games under Bompastor, including a 3-2 win over Real Madrid in her first European match with the Blues. That’s our longest ever winning run in the competition.
85 – Bompastor delivered an 85 per cent winning rate in all competitions during her first season in charge. Of her total 40 matches, she won 34, drew three and lost three.
7 – The number of goals scored in Chelsea’s biggest win of the 2024/25 season, away at Crystal Palace in the WSL. This 7-0 win was only Bompastor’s second game in charge at Chelsea.
21 – The number of clean sheets kept in all competitions under Bompastor.
2 – Bompastor is only the second manager to win the league in their first season in charge in the WSL era, after Arsenal’s Laura Harvey did so in 2011.
11 – Chelsea’s 11-game unbeaten start in the WSL under Bompastor is the best start by a manager in the competition’s history, and we went on to extend that record, completing the entire season without defeat.
