Our development squad came up short in their second game of the MLS NEXT Pro Invitational tournament as they lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Two goals either side of half-time were enough to give Wolves the win. Despite Jayden Wareham setting up a grand-stand finish 10 minutes from time, the West Midlands side held on for the win in their first game of the tournament.

Despite chances for Edwin Andersson, Omari Hutchinson and Charlie Webster, our young Blues were unable to convert their gilt-edged chances in this one.

Following the defeat Mark Robinson provided his thoughts on a highly competitive game despite it being pre-season.

‘Tonight offered a different challenge to what we have faced so far in pre-season. We had a lot of early opportunities, including hitting the post. It was key we got the first goal and not them but an unfortunate slip in midfield meant we turned over possession and their counter-attack led to a penalty.

‘We continued to create chances but got a little frustrated towards the end of the first half. After another error, they capitalised again, and that gave us a mountain to climb as they sat in a deep block to protect their lead.’

Despite the defeat, Robinson drew out some positives, reiterating that it was good for the boys to face this type of team in pre-season.

‘It was great the players came up against this sort of organised challenge now as we have been talking and working on the different solutions needed depending on the challenge in front of you.

‘We got a lot right, as our 20 attempts to their four would tell you, but tonight we lacked that vital bit of quality in the final third. But overall, there were plenty of positives and plenty to improve on.’

Our boys will next be in action on Sunday 24 July as they take on Toronto FC II.
