With Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo both ruled out of our opening game of the season through injury, it was the 19-year-old who got the nod from Enzo Maresca to partner Trevoh Chalobah in the centre of defence for our first Premier League fixture of 2025/26.

Acheampong has been seen more often at full-back since graduating to the senior side at the end of last year, but the central role is one he knows well from his time in the Chelsea Academy.

That was clear as he put in a confident and assured performance to help us to a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw, particularly impressing in the way he handled the threat of Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

‘The manager didn’t really put too much pressure on me,’ explained Acheampong, after just the third Premier League start of his young career.

‘He just told me to play my game and do the best I can. That Mateta is strong so to be ready and prepared for it.

‘I was definitely expecting a battle with Mateta and I had to be ready for it. There were a lot of one-v-one situations but it was okay.’

This was Acheampong’s 15th senior appearance for Chelsea overall – and sixth in this competition – since making his debut as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in May 2024.

He admits the level of opponents he is facing in the English top-flight means it remains a tough challenge, but he agrees with Maresca’s pre-match assessment that it is a challenge the teenager is ready to step up and face.

‘It’s hard playing in the Premier League, to be fair, but I just go into it thinking it’s just another match and just trying to do my best,’ Josh added.

‘Coming back in for pre-season after the Club World Cup I felt ready, so whenever I get my chance I just need to be prepared.

‘Hopefully I can play as many games as possible and we can win as many matches as possible.’
