Chelsea’s Aggie Beever-Jones played a crucial role in our Women’s League Cup final victory, coming on as a half-time substitute and scoring our second goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester United.

While the strike won’t go down as the most aesthetically pleasing of her career so far, as the old adage goes, they all count. And this one helped provide us with a two-goal cushion in what had been a typically closely-fought game against Manchester United.

The Cobham graduate explained why the timing of her goal was so crucial within the context of the match, and although she was delighted to find the back of the net, the England international was also keen to praise the efforts of those around her, picking out one team-mate in particular.

Kadeisha Buchanan had made her first start since November 2024 following her ACL injury, playing 60 impeccable minutes and consequently, a big role in keeping the clean sheet.

‘It’s not always the prettiest of finishes when you score,’ said Beever-Jones afterwards. ‘I think it was quite a striker’s instinct kind of goal. To be honest, I think it was a really good team performance from everyone.

‘I think Kadeisha was unbelievable today. She’s been out injured for such a long time, and came into the team and was class. So overall, a very good day and hopefully the first trophy that we get, with a few more to come.

‘It was so important to get the second [goal]. I mean, the next goal was always going to be huge, and as much as we wanted it to be us, you never know with United. They are a tough team. They've got some great individual players, so I was really happy it was us who scored.’

The striker has started 13 matches and made six substitute appearances so far this season, but her progress has been stunted by problems with injury.

Now fit again and with a trophy under her belt, Beever-Jones feels like this is exactly the right time for her – and the team as a whole – to kick on and build some momentum with a key period of the season just in front of us.

‘I've had an injury which kept me back a little bit, and in that time, I’ve learned a whole lot about myself and listened to my body, but now I feel good,' she continued. 'I'm really happy to get back in the team, back on the pitch today and get a goal, and hopefully, there are many more to come now.

‘It’s a nice start to get back from the international break and get in the flow, but we're now in a really busy block. Every player is going to be so important this month.

'This trophy gives us a good little snowball effect to keep going, and hopefully we'll come away at the end of this block in a good position for all the rest of the competitions.’
