There is a chance to get to know Alejandro Garnacho better in an exclusive interview with the new Blues winger inside the matchday programme for this weekend’s game against Sunderland.
The Argentinian immediately got to work after signing for Chelsea and, having made the decision to leave his home in Madrid for England at the age of 16, he reveals he has always known what he wants from the game.
'At 10 years old, I moved to Atletico Madrid,' he explains. 'I was there for five years before I moved to England, and I’m very happy to play here. The type of football they play here is really nice and really good for me, and also the passion of the fans and everything.
'Here everything is fast. I like this type of football – everyone watches the Premier League, it’s the most exciting league. So I’m happy that I made that move and, now, to be here [at Chelsea] is incredible.'
Garnacho also discusses his close friendship with Enzo Fernandez, who shares the same name as his son, and talks about the growing Argentinian enclave at Chelsea, following the arrival of Facundo Buonanotte.
The South American theme continues elsewhere in the programme, where Gus Poyet speaks to us about the part he played in two memorable games between Chelsea and Sunderland at the Bridge. Of course, there was his wondergoal – that scissors volley – in the 4-0 win over the Mackems on the opening day of the 1999/00 season, about which he still marvels more than a quarter of a century later.
'You can see it in our faces if you see how we celebrated the goal – it was like ecstasy, like everybody’s saying, ‘Wow, what have we just done?’'
And then there was his return here as Sunderland manager in April 2014, when his side ended Jose Mourinho’s 77-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League, which he sheds new light on with a detailed account of the ins and outs of the situation from his perspective.
