Alejandro Garnacho acknowledged the Blues were left to rue missed chances after our 2-2 draw with Qarabag in Azerbaijan.
It was a tough contest in Baku with the home side proving to be a difficult opponent, and despite Estevao Willian breaking the deadlock with his second Champions League goal of the campaign, the hosts scored twice before the interval, which meant we went into the break a goal down.
Head coach Enzo Maresca turned to his bench for a response, and Garnacho served up exactly what the boss was looking for as he arrowed a strike into the bottom corner to equalise less than 10 minutes after the restart, however, the Blues were unable to grab the all-important winner.
The 21-year-old was left disappointed that we weren’t able to convert any of our opportunities, but was pleased to help contribute to what could end up being an important point come the end of the league phase.
Garnacho said: ‘I think we deserved to win, we created a lot of chances, but we’re not happy. We are Chelsea and we have to try to win every game.'
Coming onto the pitch as part of a triple substitution during the half-time interval, it was clear that Maresca was looking for extra impetus, and Alejandro was happy to oblige.
‘He wanted me to help the team, come on and play my part,’ Garnacho said of his half-time instructions.
‘I scored to equalise, but it’s not enough. We needed to score another. It was a good finish, and I just tried to help the team with a goal or an assist, or even just hard work, but I wanted to win the game.
‘As a winger, you have to deliver with a goal or an assist, and it’s the way you can help the team, and that’s what I’m trying to do.’
He also sent a special message to the travelling Chelsea fans who had followed the team to Baku as part of a 5,000-mile round trip.
He said: ‘It’s great to have the supporters follow us to every country we go to. We appreciate the support and thanks to them.
‘Now we're going to head back, and we’ll try to rest and win on Saturday against Wolves.’
