Xabi Alonso says the extent of the injury that forced Maxence Lacroix off against Liverpool will not be known for a couple of days, with the Blues manager also explaining why Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto were replaced in the second half of our Carabao Cup tie at Anfield.

It proved a painful night on Merseyside for Alonso's side. We took the lead in the fourth-round tie through a Morgan Rogers penalty, only for Cody Gakpo to convert from the spot for Liverpool three minutes later.

In the end, with the game level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the contest was decided from 12 yards. Unfortunately, we were eventually defeated in a shootout at Anfield.

For Lacroix, the pain was more literal. The French defender was in clear discomfort as he left the pitch to be replaced by Levi Colwill at the end of the first half, and Alonso confirmed the nature of the French defender's injury after the game.

'It’s too early to tell how serious it is,' said Alonso after the final whistle. 'Unfortunately he felt something in his hamstring and we need a couple of days to check what the injury’s going to be.'

Caicedo and Gusto, meanwhile, played 68 minutes before being replaced by Valentin Barco and Marco Palestra respectively. But the Blues manager is hopeful that neither suffered an issue that will keep them out of action.

'The game had very intense moments,' our manager added. 'We knew that it was going to be physical and after we had to deal with Max, Moi had little problems. Malo as well; he had cramps. We were a little bit forced with substitutions.'
