Xabi Alonso is 'really happy' to have Moises Caicedo back in the Chelsea starting XI for this afternoon's Premier League clash with Bournemouth, and has outlined why captain Reece James is absent from today's squad.
The Blues return to top-flight action this afternoon following the extended international break, with the Cherries visiting Stamford Bridge in search of their first league win of the campaign.
Alonso's side, meanwhile, are looking to get back to winning ways after a disappointing result against Brentford last time out – an ambition boosted by Caicedo's return.
The Ecuadorian midfielder has only made one curtailed substitute appearance this term. However, after recovering from injury during the international break, he is now back in the starting XI.
Alonso said: 'We are really happy Moi is back in the Premier League. He is a top-class player and we were missing him. Now we need to help him with his feelings on the pitch. The same for Joao [Pedro] as well. This is how we have used the time in the international break.'
There is no James in the squad, though, with Alonso explaining: 'Unfortunately, Reece picked up a little injury yesterday, so we’ll see [in the coming days].'
Alonso is up against a familiar foe in the dugout this afternoon, with the Spaniard having taken on Marco Rose during his time coaching Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
Rose has yet to taste a Premier League victory, but Alonso is aware of the qualities sides coached by the German possess.
He said: 'Marco is adapting to his new team. I think many of the ideas they were doing before, he has stayed consistent with. He is a smart coach and was intelligent at Leipzig in the times we played against him. So for sure, today will be a tough game.'
