Xabi Alonso believes Marco Palestra’s talent, versatility and personality will make him an important asset for Chelsea throughout the 2026/27 campaign.

Palestra joined the Blues this summer from Atalanta after being named Serie A's standout defender following a breakthrough season on loan at Cagliari.

Palestra showcased his all-round ability as a full-back and a wing-back with the Sardinian club. But perhaps most impressively, he excelled on either side of the pitch to the extent many found it impossible to tell which was his preferred flank or stronger foot.

That is a rare talent even at the top level of the game in England, as Alonso discussed when facing the media ahead of Monday night’s opening Chelsea fixture of the season away at Fulham.

‘I would say it's probably unusual in England because, in Italy for example, it's quite common, and he has had this education in Italian football to play both profiles,’ explained Xabi. ‘It doesn't matter if you are right-footed or left-footed, just that you are versatile. So he has this option, this energy.

‘He's something different, maybe not that common here, but in Italy it's quite common.’

However, it is not just Palestra’s versatility on the pitch which has impressed our manager, with the Spaniard quick to highlight the personality the defender has brought to Cobham and the positive effect he is already having on the squad before his competitive debut for the Blues.

‘He's had a great impact as well in the changing room,’ Alonso added.

‘He's integrated really well. He's a great guy and with this freshness that he has brought, apart from his football qualities, he's a very great addition to the club.’
