It’s been almost three months since Alyssa Thompson moved thousands of miles from everything she’d ever known in Los Angeles to join Chelsea, and the dynamic winger has hit the ground running in every conceivable way.
With three goals and an assist already to her name, Thompson has established herself as an important member of the side, having made eight starting appearances and come off the bench on a further three occasions.
Her rapid pace helps to break down stubborn defences, and her skill on the ball creates opportunities for others to shine.
All of which is made more impressive considering she only turned 21 last month, and is a testament to the environment that welcomed her into the Chelsea family. Having two of her international team-mates in Naomi Girma and Catarina Macario alongside her has undeniably been of benefit, too.
‘It's been really good because it's been exactly what I expected of the team, and of England,’ says Thompson when we sat down at Cobham before the international break to reflect on her experiences so far.
‘It's been so nice having Nay and Cat here, just helping get settled in, and knowing where to stay, or places that they've been, that they didn't like, or really liked.
‘So that has been really helpful, and I feel like it’s been a good adjustment and definitely way easier than I thought it would be.’
Moving from one of the world’s major cities to another has helped Thompson to settle quickly. We meet on a freezing cold day in November, and it’s also evident that the temperature change will take some more getting used to.
‘London and LA are pretty similar in that when you go into the city, you find a lot of different foods, cultures and things like that,’ she continues. ‘It's just way colder here! You don't see the sun as much as in LA or feel it on your skin.
‘English culture in general is definitely different from American culture and from LA culture. But it's cool to experience a new place and be somewhere that I've never been before. There's a sushi place I go to a lot, and it's my favourite. I go there on any off day that I can, and I really love Selfridges!’
On the pitch, Thompson’s performances have shown improvement in every game, and in particular, her stunning opener against Arsenal was proof that she can perform on the biggest stage.
Voted as the Women’s Super League goal of the month, that strike has been recognised by fans across the board, and this is only just the beginning for the American star.
‘I feel like I've been able to find my footing a little bit more now, and being able to know that I have a lot of support from the team and from the staff has really helped with my confidence,’ Thompson concluded.
‘Just being here has been an adjustment, so being able to score already and contribute to the group performances was beyond my expectations before coming here, so I'm just happy that I'm able to help the team in any way I can.’
