Chelsea’s Alyssa Thompson knows it is 'going to take a lot of fight and determination' to book our place in the next round of the Women’s FA Cup when we take on Manchester United at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
The young forward believes it will take a resolute performance if we are to advance to the quarter-final of the competition, but recent improvements have come from the side pulling even closer together.
While the Blues have been handed a sturdy test against last year’s FA Cup final opponents, Thompson believes we have what it takes to advance.
‘I feel like the game will definitely be difficult,’ explained Thompson. ‘It’s between two really good teams in our league. So we're really excited to play. It's going to be hard, but we're ready to fight. Most of the teams in the WSL are evenly matched, so playing games like this is exciting, and we are always up for it.
‘It's going to take a lot of fight and determination. We have to trust in ourselves and each other and have confidence. If we all stick to what we're good at and know that everyone's bringing their best to the game, I think we can get the result that we want.
‘The team is really coming together. We knew, coming off a couple of losses, that we wanted to do a lot better, and as a team, we looked within ourselves. We also came together to see how we can help each other on the pitch and off the pitch, and came together to see what the issue really was.
‘I think we are just going to continue to keep growing and getting better on the pitch because we have each other's backs, and we know the quality that we bring.’
Having joined Chelsea from Angel City in her native Los Angeles as a deadline day signing in the summer, Thompson did not arrive in time to play a part in last year’s 3-0 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
That said, the iconic English ground has already played a role in the 21-year-old’s career, as she made her debut for the US Women’s National Team at Wembley when she was 17, coming on as a substitute to replace Megan Rapinoe in front of an 80,000-strong crowd.
‘It would mean a lot to me to reach Wembley in this competition,’ she continued. ‘It's such an amazing atmosphere - I've played there before with the US. It would be really cool to play there at club level, representing Chelsea.
‘It's such an amazing thing to get to a final too. Hopefully, we get there because winning more trophies is what Chelsea is about. The fans help us by bringing the energy that they always do. I can always feel it from the sidelines. Their energy gives us energy on the pitch.’
