When Cole Palmer scores, often you can expect the Chelsea Official App Player of the Match vote to also come his way, due to the forward's popularity among Blues fans. However, such was the quality of Malo Gusto's all-action performance against Everton that the Frenchman took almost two-thirds of the votes. Here we explain why!

The line-up graphics before and after this match might list Malo as being at right-back but don't be fooled, he spent the majority of this contest in the centre of the park, to great effect.

It is no secret Enzo Maresca is partial to inverting one - or on occasions - both of his full-backs in an attempt to create an overload in midfield and yesterday it worked perfectly.

Whenever the Blues had the ball, Gusto would move into the defensive midfield role alongside Reece James, which allowed Enzo Fernandez to push on into the more advanced No.10 space alongside Palmer.

You can see this in the average positions graphic above, with Malo in the No.27 shirt alongside our skipper wearing the 24.

It worked really well, as Gusto was regularly able to find space and alongside James as the pair dictated our play.

It was not only in our half either, as the France international was able to create space in the opposition's half and no Chelsea player made more than his 17 passes into the final third - three more than the next best Enzo and Pedro Neto.

And these were not just sideways, simple passes. In fact it was Gusto who created our opener, as he produced a masterful through ball midway through the first half for Palmer to run onto and score, which you can see in the video below.

No Chelsea player created more chances (two) or had more shots on target (two) and only Marc Cucurella and Trevoh Chalobah (both 67) completed more passes than Gusto (60).

He was seemingly always an option, whether that was deep in our half or on the edge of the Everton box.

And as mentioned already, he was not simply looking to keep the play ticking over. Gusto was often the one looking to add impetus into our play.

This was seen clearest just before half-time, when Robert Sanchez claimed a cross and immediately rolled the ball out to Gusto. After driving forward briefly, he passed forward to Neto and after the Portuguese winger beat his man brilliantly and drove into the box, it was Gusto who was there to latch onto his pull-back and finish smartly with his left foot.

The slick move can be seen in the visualisation above, as the clip below cut off Gusto's initial role in the goal.

Whether it was the assist for Palmer, his own finish, the left-footed crossfield pass on 28 minutes or taking on a long-range shot, the 22-year-old was full of confidence at the Bridge. For good reason it seems.

Despite his impact on the ball and in the final third, he did not neglect the other parts of his game, either.

The tackle and composed recovery play he showcased up against Jack Grealish 11 minutes before the interval was just one snapshot of his impressive defensive work.

One of the downsides of playing as an inverted full-back is the risk of getting caught out with a long ball over the top and even when that did happen with the score at 1-0, Sanchez was there to bail him out and save from Grealish. Gusto's performance deserved that break.

Malo's all-action display is highlighted in the heat map above which shows how he was getting on the ball both centrally and wide right, both in our half and theirs.

Sometimes winners of the Player of the Match poll do so off the back of their goal alone but this was certainly not the case against Everton.

This was a performance of the highest order as yet another of our defenders showed once more how his impact can be felt in the middle of the park as well as in their more traditional full-back role.
