Not for the first time this season Moises Caicedo was your choice for Player of the Match, with the Ecuadorian delivering another outstanding performance in our victory over Benfica.
In what was a hard-fought game shorn of many clear chances – both sides’ Expected Goals (xG) tally was under one – Caicedo’s energy and quality in midfield was crucial.
It was not only that he helped restrict Benfica’s attacking threat by winning possession back and cutting off supply lines. Caicedo was also heavily involved in the attacking third, completing 15 passes there - five more than anyone else on the pitch. That he did not misplace one only highlights his tidiness on the ball. In fact, of the 61 passes Caicedo attempted all evening, 60 found a team-mate.
Of those successful passes, two set up chances which - alongside Marc Cucurella and Pedro Neto - was a joint-high figure for those wearing blue.
As the heat map below shows, Caicedo was able to influence proceedings largely in Benfica’s half, getting the Blues on the front foot as we tried to find space between and around the visitors’ massed ranks of defence.
Caicedo won possession back for us seven times – a figure bettered only by Benoit Badiashile’s ten – and on four occasions that was in Benfica’s defensive third.
Turning over possession deep in enemy territory is a key part of Enzo Maresca’s gameplan, and there are few finer exponents of the art than Caicedo.
Defensively, Caicedo was rock solid. As well as those seven ball recoveries, he won seven tackles and nine duels. Both were game-high figures. He also made two interceptions, with his ability to position himself in the right position coming to the fore once again.
One clip of Caicedo springing himself on Benfica players four times in 90 seconds to make a challenge or a block has gone viral on social media. It only serves to underline how Caicedo is never kept out of the game for long, whether he is being destructive or helping build Chelsea attacks from the middle of the park.
On what was his 100th start for the Blues, Caicedo showed he belongs at the top of the European game. It is abundantly clear he will be central to our Champions League aspirations this season.
Keep it up, Moi!
