The World Cup dream for Andrey Santos and Brazil has ended at the quarter-final stage following an extra-time defeat to Israel.

The Selecao were defeated 3-2 by Israel in San Juan Province, with Dor David Turgeman scoring the winner to ensure Brazil exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage.

Andrey Santos, Brazil’s star of the tournament, again skippered his nation and the Chelsea man impressed in midfield, with his performance capped off by a superb backheel assist in extra-time to level the scores at 2-2.

The tie was an edgy affair, with both sides being cautious in attack, and it was no surprise to see the two teams go in level pegging at half-time with neither national able to break the deadlock.

However this quarter-final tie came alive in the second half, with Brazil opening the scoring 11 minutes after the break through a classy Marcos Leonardo finish.

The Selecao’s joy was short-lived though, as Israel equalised just four minutes later as Anan Khalaili capitalised in the final third to fire home.

There was nothing separating the sides in regular time, with extra-time required to settle this tie. The additional time exploded into life, with a goal from both teams within the first three minutes of the restart.

Matheus Nascimento fired Brazil into the lead less than 60 seconds into extra-time, applying a smart finish after latching onto an incredible piece of skill from Santos after the Chelsea man had crafted a deft backheel to play the ball into the striker’s path.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game but Israel showed they had plenty of character and resilience within their ranks, as they equalised just 90 seconds later through Hamza Shibli.

They proved they should be taken seriously in this competition too, going on to find a vital winner deep into first-half injury time through Dor David Turgeman, with the Maccabi Haifa striker proving to be the hero for Israel.

Brazil pushed for a goal to take the tie to penalties but ultimately it was in vain and despite an impressive tournament, Andrey Santos and his team-mates exit at the quarter-final stage.
