Andrey Santos fulfilled a childhood dream by scoring his first goal in English football during the Blues' Carabao Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Brazilian opened the scoring early into our 4-3 victory at Molineux, finding the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area before celebrating with the travelling away supporters. Tyrique George added a second before Estevao took advantage of good work by Andrey Santos to score our third.
Wolves rallied in the second period and managed to reduce the deficit to a single goal before Jamie Gittens struck an outstanding effort. A late third for the visitors proved only a consolation.
The smile on the face of Andrey after the full-time whistle told its own story. A place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup final was secured; his goalscoring account for Chelsea was open.
‘I’m so happy to score my first goal for Chelsea,’ the 21-year-old said. ‘This moment is amazing in my career, and my wife and my parents know that I’ve always dreamed of this. I’m so happy to score. It’s been a process; that's normal. Now I’m here, I’m so happy.’
The Brazil international appreciates that there was plenty for the squad to take from our win in the Midlands. Our first half display was ruthless, our second was not of the same standard. That can't be repeated when we travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
He said: 'We have to play like we did in the first half because we played with joy. In the first half, we worked hard and got to 3-0. In the second half, we were disappointing.
‘We need to keep going, keep ahead and keep improving. The most important thing is that we were able to get the win and into the quarter-finals.’
Santos was joined at Chelsea this summer by two of his fellow countrymen. Joao Pedro arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion to help us win the Club World Cup and Estevao Willian arrived after the tournament from Palmeiras.
Santos has enjoyed helping the latter, who is just 18 years old and living outside of Brazil for the first time, settle into life at Chelsea. He is also unequivocal on the talent possessed by Estevao.
‘Joao Pedro and I have helped him because he arrived here two months ago in a new country, a new culture and a completely new language,' Andrey explained. 'So it's a process for him.
‘He has done really well – he’s amazing. In Brazil, he did amazing, and even for the national team, and now for Chelsea. I’m so happy to play with him.’
