Andrey Santos was left beaming after he helped Chelsea to a 2-1 victory against Tottenham, scoring the winner and his first Premier League goal in the process, describing his first full season in the Blues squad as a ‘dream’.
It was a typically combative game between rivals Chelsea and Spurs, with plenty of goalmouth action, and, as such, it didn't take long for our opener, coming through a wonderful Enzo Fernandez strike before the break, while Andrey doubled our advantage with a smart finish from close range with 25 minutes left on the clock.
Although the visitors did find the back of our net, it was only a consolation strike, as we secured three important points in our hunt for European football. And that objective was at the front of Santos’ mind when he spoke after the match, highlighting the importance of getting the job done with one final Premier League game left to play.
Santos opened: ‘It’s special for me because it was my first goal in the Premier League and it came in my first game against Spurs. I'm so happy because we won this game, and now we have to move on to the last game.
‘The chance to qualify for Europe is still there. I know it's a little bit hard, but we have to do our job. There is one game left, and we have to work hard this week to win it.
‘I'm so happy with this performance. I even looked at my phone after the game, and my wife had sent me a message saying, ‘Wow, what's happened with you today?’ I said, ‘I don't know, but I'm so happy, and I want that to happen more times!’
The Brazilian was also keen to praise the fantastic atmosphere conjured up by the Blues faithful at the Bridge yesterday evening, explaining that he appreciated the significance of the game, particularly after speaking with the skipper.
He said: ‘Wow – the atmosphere was amazing because we needed their support. I know that in this moment it is a little bit difficult, but today was amazing.
‘I asked some people about how important this game is here. I asked Reece when we played away, and he explained to me, and then today I scored, and we won!’
In what has been his first full season with the Blues, Andrey opened up about how much he has learned during the campaign, thanking the club for the opportunity, with him and his family having settled well.
‘I think this club opened the door to Europe for me,’ he continued. ‘I joined Chelsea when I was 18 years old, and it’s changed my life. I was playing in Brazil's second division, and moving to the Premier League is not easy.
‘And then I joined Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg as well, but now I'm back I'm so happy to be here - my family too. My second son is English, so I'm so happy because it’s like a dream for my family and me to play here at Chelsea. It's a dream.’
He also saved a final word for the club’s incoming manager, Xabi Alonso, highlighting his excitement for the season to come.
Santos added: ‘Xabi [Alonso] is a top manager and is a legend in football. He played in my position too, so I have to work hard. We will work hard to finish the season, and then in the summer, we will see what happens.’
