When the Blues needed a goalkeeper at short notice last season, we turned to someone we knew could be relied upon.

It was at the start of March that, following the announcement of Zecira Musovic's pregnancy and with Femke Liefting ruled out through injury, we brought Becky Spencer back to the club from Tottenham Hotspur on an emergency loan.

The experienced goalkeeper spent two years as a Blue earlier in her career; she knew and understood the expectations that come with playing for Chelsea.

During the season run-in, with Sonia Bompastor's side in four competitions, Spencer supported and pushed our number one stopper, Hannah Hampton. His efforts and professionalism were recognised as her loan was made permanent this summer.

‘It was amazing to have that opportunity come around,’ she reflects after a pre-season session at Cobham. ‘I had no doubts at all, and it was a very easy choice for me.

‘It's been good to be back with the girls – and to get cracking right from the start this season. I’ve been able to take my time and start to get to know some of the other girls properly. Pre-season presents a good opportunity to be sociable and get to know each other on and off the pitch.’

As Hampton went off to feature and star for England at Women’s Euro 2025, her fellow Blues goalkeeper was backing her in the TV studio.

Spencer was featured on Sky Sports to give expert insight after England won the final on penalties, and she was full of praise for her Chelsea team-mate.

‘It was excellent,’ Spencer continues. ‘The game went on for longer than I anticipated, but I really enjoyed it, and I’m obviously over the moon for the girls who are going to come back to Chelsea as European winners.

‘Having worked with her so closely, I was so proud of Hannah. She had an amazing tournament and, to be honest, I didn't expect anything less. We have a goalkeeper’s union; we always push each other and always support one another.’

Post-tournament, it was revealed only Hampton (2.9) prevented more goals than Livia Peng (2.6) at Euro 2025, and Spencer is looking forward to building a new goalkeeper’s union between the three of them in the coming season at Chelsea.

‘Pre-season has been great so far,’ concludes Spencer. ‘And now we've got Liv coming in too. She's going to be another great addition to the group.’

It certainly seems like the Blues are in safe hands.
