German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger spoke to the club following Germany’s 2-0 triumph over Austria in Brentford last night which booked their place in the European Championship semi-finals.

Germany had an impressive group-stage run, beating Finland, Spain and Denmark, and took one step closer to the UEFA Women’s Euros final last night as they beat Austria in a tough encounter in the last eight.

Speaking at full-time about the win, Berger said: ‘It was a great feeling and it’s my first tournament so it’s more enjoyable and I’m just looking forward now to the next stage. It was a tough game, but it was a great feeling to get the win.’

Berger and her international team-mates will face either France or Netherlands in the semi-finals, which will take place in Milton Keynes next Wednesday, and discussed how she will feel coming up against one of her fellow Blues in the next round.

‘I always love it! Both teams have their own qualities and I’m just looking forward to whatever comes next because I think we have a good team and it’s always nice to see Chelsea team-mates around you again even if it’s just at the side of the pitch.

‘It means business on the pitch for 90-minutes and then after that we can celebrate or say sorry to each other! I’m looking forward to it!'

The UEFA Euros have been held at venues around England with record-breaking crowds experienced throughout and Berger was full of praise for the host nation and the support shown from fans, hoping it might help entice some of her Germany team-mates to play here in the future.

‘Oh, I’m loving it, it’s almost like my second home, well it is my second home! I told my girls
in the Germany team that it’s a fantastic place for the Euros and I think it showed with all the audience records we were breaking in the last couple of weeks.

‘The girls are enjoying it and I’m enjoying it and I’m actually quite proud of where I play as we get to have this all the time and I hope they will come over to England at some point in the future as well because the crowds are amazing and you have more fun when you have so many people around you.’

Berger has also been on hand to help show her team the sights adding: ‘We have a really good organiser who has showed us around. For me it was a normal sightseeing tour but some of the girls really enjoyed it. I’m happy that they liked it!’

Looking ahead to what could follow for the German side, Berger jokingly added how she felt thinking about the exciting prospect of an England versus Germany final, facing fellow Blue and partner Jess Carter at Wembley, adding: ‘I’m buzzing! Well it’s another game but I don’t have friends for 90 minutes and then after that we will discuss what happened after!’

Once the tournament is over, Berger will take some well-earned rest before returning to Cobham for pre-season training ahead of the team's US tour, something which she is looking forward to.

‘You know what, I’m actually missing the girls! I’m looking forward to going back and seeing them all but for now I just have to focus on the games and for whatever comes next and then after that I can think about the Chelsea girls and being back with the team.’
