With just three days to go now until Chelsea begin the defence of our Women’s Super League title against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, we profile Dutch defender Aniek Nouwen, who has returned to the club after a loan spell in Italy.
Name: Aniek Nouwen
National Team: Netherlands
Place of Birth: Helmond, Netherlands
DOB: 9 March 1999 (age 24)

Nouwen penned a three-year deal with the club when she signed from PSV Eindhoven in her native Netherlands during the summer of 2021. She was already vastly experienced at club and international level when she became a Blue at the age of 22.
In her debut year for Chelsea, Nouwen made her first start against Leicester City in October 2021. She scored her only goals of the season in wins over the Foxes in the FA Cup and the WSL later in the campaign.
Having played four games in the first half of her second season in west London, Nouwen put pen to paper on a new deal with the Blues, which runs until the summer of 2025, and in January she embarked on a loan to AC Milan for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
On the international stage, Nouwen starred for the Netherlands at various age groups and stepped up to the senior side in 2019. She scored in the victory over Estonia which secured their spot at the 2022 European Championships where she represented her country, and was part of the squad at the Olympics the previous year.
Nouwen was a member of the Netherlands squad which reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She made her World Cup debut during a 1-1 draw with the United States in the group stage.
