Brazil’s passion for the beautiful game needs explaining to no one and its street-level soccer culture is world-renowned. Unveiled this week is a contribution Chelsea Football Club is making to further inspire young players – with a newly refurbished local court in the heart of Sao Paulo.

As a club, we want to continue to boost participation in football and promote its power in bringing communities together. In the Diadema area of Sao Paulo, a collection of Brazilian creators and influencers have gathered together to see for themselves how this daily-used but previously rundown football court has been transformed.

Its cracked concrete and drooping mesh have been replaced by anti-slip acrylic coating and large murals and of course there is plenty of Chelsea blue. To increase the usability of the court, floodlights will be installed too.

At the opening of the court, some of Brazil’s brightest music talents, MC Marks (pictured above) and Meno K, were in attendance and performed their exclusive song written about the project and what it means for the local community. The murals seen around the court were commissioned from local artists and represent the close connection between Sao Paulo, football and Brazilian music culture.

Sao Paulo is the city where Estevao Willian broke through as a professional, as did former Chelsea stars such as Oscar and Willian, and David Luiz hails from Diadema itself. Chelsea’s gift to that neighbourhood does not end today with the opening of the fresh-look playing area. It continues on with a commitment to help maintain the facility in the long-term – with free access for local youth to ongoing football and community programmes, harnessing the sport’s unifying spirit.

Scott Fenton, brand director at Chelsea Football Club who was at the event, said:

'This was a really special day for Chelsea FC. Seeing this court come to life and the excitement of the local community has been both inspiring and humbling - and demonstrates the power of football in bringing people together.

'We want to keep doing our bit to inspire the next generation of players and this is a long-standing commitment to play our part.'

Chelsea has not just painted a court. We have created a local landmark to inspire the young generation of players now, and also those to come.
