Chelsea were worthy winners against Manchester United at Wembley yesterday, and our two goalscorers in the Women’s FA Cup final epitomised a season of renewal at the club.

In Sonia Bompastor’s first season in charge, one of her new signings Sandy Baltimore opened the scoring from the penalty spot, and then completed it late on with a thunderous close-range finish.

Shortly before her second goal of the game, Baltimore had delivered a superb set-piece that Catarina Macario headed in to all but secure a victory, and with it our third domestic trophy of a wonderful season.

Bompastor was quick to praise the two goalscorers during her post-match press conference, starting with Baltimore. The 25-year-old has been exceptional down our left-hand side, and her Wembley display was the perfect way to crown her debut campaign in England.

‘It’s difficult to only mention one player’s name because to achieve the treble you have to be able to have a team performance all through the season, but Sandy has been incredible,’ enthused Bompastor when asked about Baltimore.

‘The team was performing well and it’s always easier for an individual to perform when the team is performing well, but Sandy had an incredible season.

‘For her first year in England, she adapted to the team and the league well and quickly. She had a big impact on our results and performances this season.’

It has not always been plain sailing for Macario in a Chelsea shirt, though. She was out of the game for a long time because of an injury sustained before joining, making her Blues debut towards the end of 2023/24.

Bompastor, who managed Macario at Lyon, has carefully managed her minutes this term to help the USA international return to her best. It has paid off.

‘When we won the Champions League at Lyon, she was incredible in that final and also all through the season,’ detailed Bompastor.

‘Her level was really high, and we are trying to get her in that place. She has showed how much quality she has and how much talent she has as a player.'

‘We know exactly how we need to work with her,' added Bompastor.

'She is on the same page, and that is most important. I’m confident. Cata is a player that really wants to work hard and go in the right direction. She is really ambitious.

‘If you want to lift more trophies you have to have quality and talent in your squad. Cata is one of them.’
