There are only good vibes in the women's building at Cobham, a happy head coach Sonia Bompastor says, as the Blues continue to get to work in pre-season.
Sitting in the Chelsea head coach's office adjacent to the home changing room at Stamford Bridge – a space she will frequent during the season – we caught up with Bompastor to discuss how the first two weeks of working with her squad have gone.
The priority has been to put the foundations of her philosophy in place. It is early days, of course, but Bompastor has been impressed with how receptive the players have been to what she is trying to implement.
‘It is most important to make sure the players understand what we are trying to do on the field and in training sessions to build our game model,’ Bompastor explains.
‘It has been really great. I am really enjoying having the players back and working with them. At the moment, the atmosphere is really good. There are good vibes in the building.’
Throughout our chat, our head coach refers back to her game model and philosophy time and time again. There is a clear identity to a Bompastor team that Chelsea fans can expect to see.
And there has already been evidence of it on the Cobham grass, as Bompastor adds: ‘We want to be a dominant team in the league and in the Champions League. We want to work hard and have a good style of play.
‘When I say we want to be dominant, we really want to have possession of the ball. We want to work very hard to make sure we control the game and dictate the tempo.
‘It is something really important it’s something we have been working on. The players are responding really well to that kind of work.
‘We work a lot with video clips to show them what we want them to do on the field, but also giving some feedback from the training sessions.’
It’s not only on the pitch that Bompastor is getting to know her squad. It has been vital, she says, to develop a connection with the person and the player now if the Blues are to achieve their goals.
‘For me, it is really important every day to spend time to talk to my players,’ Bompastor says. ‘It’s really important for me to have this communication to make the players know what we’re working on, to understand our rules and what we want to build.
‘Having these opportunities every day, I think everyone has been open-minded and they want to listen to what we tell them about all the details.
‘It’s important if you want to get good chemistry together – to have the cohesion and the dynamic – I’m the one who has to do that and make sure it stays at a good level throughout the whole season.’
