Sonia Bompastor is glad Alyssa Thompson plays for Chelsea, with the Blues head coach highlighting our summer signing is ‘improving game after game’.

The 21-year-old joined the Blues from Angel City in September and has been eased into life in the first team at Chelsea.

She was brought into the starting XI for yesterday’s high-profile London derby with Arsenal and delivered in style, producing an exquisite finish to open the scoring with her first Women’s Super League goal.

The American winger also caused the Gunners defence problems, with her searing pace and directness a constant threat in the first half.

Thompson was replaced in the 86th minute at the Emirates and, unfortunately, the Blues were unable to hold on to our lead as a late Alessia Russo strike meant the points were shared.

However, Bompastor was impressed with the impact Thompson made in north London and outlined her belief that the United States international is going from strength to strength.

'I'm glad she plays for Chelsea,' said Bompastor. ‘For me as a manager, you can see how much talent she has and the quality she brings to the team.

'I think she's improving game after game, becoming more connected to her teammates, and understanding the way we want to play better. I think that's good.

'She had a good game today, and having a player like her in the team helps us.'
