Sonia Bompastor has won the Women's Super League title in her first season at Chelsea, going 20 games unbeaten to achieve the objective with two games to spare, and is 'so proud' of her players.
A draw against Manchester United would have been enough to secure the league crown after Arsenal lost 5-2 to Aston Villa earlier in the evening. We secured the 1-0 win over Manchester United regardless, with a solitary goal from Lucy Bronze giving us the three points.
The boss admitted she did not expect to secure the title so soon, but it was the most welcome of surprises.
'I think it's a great achievement,' Bompastor smiled. 'Probably it feels a bit unreal because, yeah, we were not expecting Arsenal to drop points tonight, but being away, being able to bounce back after the game on Sunday and being able to win again against a big team, Man United, feels amazing.
'I told my team before the game, that's a big opportunity for us tonight to take a step closer to the title. Even if I was not expecting this to be real and achieved tonight, but I'm so proud of my players, all of the staff, all of the club. To be able to achieve this with two games left, I think it's a great, great achievement.'
Coming into an already successful side, with five consecutive titles already in the trophy cabinet, Bompastor has hit the ground running since she arrived in the summer.
Yet the boss has not taken anything for granted on the way to the WSL title, even if she feels there are those that always expect this Chelsea side to win trophies.
'Starting the season, I was not expecting us to be in that position, to be able to achieve that,' Bompastor continued. 'With two games left, I certainly thought we would have to fight until the end...this league is really competitive.
'So just for us to be in that position, to be unbeaten, still be unbeaten, and to achieve what we just achieved is something really good, but no it was not easy to come as a new manager to a new country, to adjust to a new league. I learned a lot. But alongside me, I had a great bunch of players and also a great staff.
'I think maybe for some people, they just think being Chelsea, it's really easy for us to achieve that. But it's not. We worked really hard, and we had the right mindset from the beginning of the season until now and will until the end. So I think, yeah, it's a lot of hard work that we've put in every day. I'm really happy for that, really pleased with that.'
