Sonia Bompastor says a change in intensity was key to Chelsea's 4-1 victory at Everton in the Women's Super League – and the Blues head coach also praised Sam Kerr after the striker netted a brace at Goodison Park.

Almost three weeks had passed since the Blues were last in competitive action, and Bompastor felt her players needed a lift at the break after going in level at 1-1.

'I think, as you could probably see, the performance in the first half was not good enough for us,' explained our head coach.

'If you reflect on that, they did only have one shot and scored a great goal in one moment in the game from a transition. We knew that could happen and we were prepared, but it happens when we take risks and play the way we play.

'It made things more difficult for us because in terms of physical aspects, we were not good enough in the first half.

'We had the conversation at half-time, where we were saying we need to mentally bring more energy on the pitch for the second half and to play with more intensity. I think we did that.'

Having opened the scoring, Kerr re-established our advantage early into the second period before goals from Ellie Carpenter and Erin Cuthbert ensured we would return from Merseyside with all three points.

Our victory coincided with Manchester United drawing 0-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur, which has given us a four-point advantage over Marc Skinner’s side in the race for a place in the Women’s Champions League this season.

Bompastor is focused on achieving that objective and is pleased our win over Everton means our fate is in our own hands, with United still to play in the last match of the season at Stamford Bridge on 16 May.

‘That's the goal, the clear goal for us,’ she continued. ‘We said that before this game, we had three games left, and I think it was important for us to stay in control for that reason.

‘But our mentality is very much going into every match until the end of the season to win every single game, to make sure we are in control as much as possible.’

With a strike in each half, Kerr equalled Fran Kirby’s record of 63 goals in the WSL for Chelsea, and Bompastor paid tribute to the Australian’s contributions.

She was also keen to thank the travelling fans for their support, especially after they had made a long journey up to Merseyside for a 12pm kick-off.

‘Everyone knows how good Sam is as a player and what she has brought since she signed for Chelsea,’ she said. ‘She's a world-class player. I think having her in the team changes a lot of things in a positive way.

‘Our fans have been incredible this season. I know in some moments they were a little bit frustrated because they are so used to winning, and that's normal, that's our standards. We always try to put everything on the pitch and to leave the pitch giving our all, and I think they probably also recognise that.

‘So when we have the opportunity, also in tough moments, we can feel like they are with us and they are trying to lift us. I think that's great. We really enjoy that, and at the end of every game we want to make sure we share moments with them because our job is to also share the emotions, especially when you win the game.

‘I know a lot of them have been travelling here since early this morning, making a lot of effort to come and support us. So I'm pleased for them when we win the games.’
