Sonia Bompastor believes Lucy Bronze 'led by example' for Chelsea against Wolfsburg to ensure the Blues believed it was possible to come from behind and win.
No visiting English team had ever beaten Wolfsburg. The Blues had to change that statistic if we were to guarantee progression to the Champions League quarter-finals.
There was an early setback for Bompastor's side when Alexandra Popp rifled a half-volley behind Livia Peng to put the hosts ahead, but we gained greater control as the first half progressed and grew in confidence.
And, on the stroke of half time, after making two key defensive contributions to deny Wolfsburg a second goal, Bronze rose highest to head home a corner.
With momentum now with Chelsea, we started the second half strongly and twice came close to taking the lead; Alyssa Thompson struck the woodwork before Erin Cuthbert saw a shot from the edge of the penalty area saved.
But, just after the hour mark, substitute Johnna Rytting Kaneryd crossed and Sam Kerr was left unmarked to head home. The Blues had to defend well from that point, and Bronze cleared another Wolfsburg chance off the line and continuously put her body on the line to preserve our victory.
The England international was named the Player of the Match by UEFA and by Blues supporters on the Chelsea Official App, and Bompastor highlighted the impact the 34-year-old had on our performance in Germany.
'When she’s playing at this level [the Champions League], it’s not the first time that Lucy has led by example,' Bompastor reflected after our 2-1 victory that secured a place in the Champions League last eight.
'On the pitch and off the pitch, she helped the team. She helped us to stay in the game and to believe it was possible to win.
'I think she impacted the result and the performance; she always has the tools to do that.'
