New head coach Sonia Bompastor has hailed the leadership qualities of our captain Millie Bright – and discussed the Blues’ four summer signings.
This week has been the first Bompastor has worked with her new squad in person, but even from afar the Blues boss has been left impressed by the Chelsea skipper.
Over the summer, Bompastor and Bright had conversations over the phone, and it quickly became clear how the latter leads by example.
‘I think it’s really important to have leaders in the team,’ explained Bompastor. ‘Millie has been one of those leaders and I think you can tell from those conversations I had with her on the phone that she’s such a great athlete, but also such a great person.
‘She is for sure one of the players in the squad who I will rely on. She’s not the only one, but she is a leader in this squad.’
Work has also been done this summer to strengthen our squad with four new arrivals: Julia Bartel, Sandy Baltimore, Oriane Jean-Francois and Lucy Bronze.
It has been important, Bompastor says, to identify players which suit the style she is looking to implement.
‘We have been working alongside each other with Paul Green,’ Bompastor said. ‘We have the same vision on the performance.
‘We know we have to have a pretty strong squad if we want to achieve our goals.
‘I’m trying to find players who will fit my game model and my philosophy. Bringing in new players is something important as well for the atmosphere. We’re starting a new era, so there are new players and new staff.
‘Me and Paul talk a lot about what kind of players fit in my game model and what kind of players we have to bring in to achieve our goals. We are on the same page.
‘We have been working for several months now to have these transfers. I’m really happy with them and - maybe - I’m not finished yet.’
