Blues head coach Sonia Bompastor is looking forward to leading her team at Stamford Bridge once more as we take to the pitch for the first time in the Women's Super League this season when we host Manchester City tomorrow evening.
Bompastor has played one match already at the Bridge this season, a win against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League in October, but this will be a maiden outing at the stadium in the league. And what an encounter it is set to be.
It is a top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City arriving in London currently sitting top of the WSL table, with one point more than the Blues having played a game more. A win for Bompastor side's would see them finish the day at the summit and would extend our winning start to the campaign to seven league wins.
And our head coach believes there is no better place to host such a hotly-anticipated fixture than in front of the Chelsea faithful at Stamford Bridge.
'We always want to play in the big stadiums with a nice environment,' Bompastor told the media in her pre-match press conference. 'It was the case in the Celtic game playing away at Celtic Park.
'We are so happy to be back at Stamford Bridge. We have a lot of history in that stadium. The players really love to play in that stadium. And I love playing there, also. Feeling the support of our fans is going to be something good.'
Both sides have been in impressive form this season and both are unbeaten, although our opponents have dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Like Bompastor's side, Man City aim to dominate possession and that is something she has prepared for.
'The players have to be ready,' Bompastor said. 'You always have to give credit to the opposition. City are a team who possesses the ball very well. We are ready for that. We have a plan.
'We know exactly how we can cause them some trouble on that part. But, mentally, you have to be ready to face a team where sometimes we won't have the ball and that's OK. We are mentally ready for that.'
Earlier on in the season, Bompastor had called for more consistency from her side. She believes in recent games she has started to see that, highlighting the positives from Wednesday night's 2-1 win against Celtic in the Champions League.
'We are improving,' Bompastor said. 'It's getting better and better. From our performance on Wednesday night, happy with the result and we had some good statistics.
'We had 78 per cent possession in the game, so I think that's really good. The only thing in that game is we created a lot of chances, but we couldn't score more goals. We had good data on expected goals, so we could have been more efficient. We created a lot of chances which is something we are consistent on.'
With this being a top-two clash, Bompastor was asked by the journalists if she sees the result being a deciding one in the title-race, especially after Chelsea pipped City to the title on the final day of last season on goal difference.
'I don't think this game will be decisive,' Bompastor said. 'I think this league is so competitive and all the games are really difficult. Of course, it will be an important game, but, as I said, not decisive.
'We are heading into this game with a lot of confidence even if we know Man City are a good squad and have good players, individually and collectively. But, we are also in a good dynamic. We have a lot of quality and talent, and we feel ready for the game tomorrow.'
A win against Manchester City would see Bompastor become the first head coach to win each of their first seven games in charge in the WSL. But, she says, the focus is not on her but instead on her players and the job at hand.
'My vision is really clear,' Bompastor said. 'This game is about the players. As a manager, my job is to make sure the players have the game plan for tomorrow. We have practiced the last two days on that.
'It's very clear for everyone, but now it's their game. I will be at the side of the pitch supporting them and making sure they feel my support. It will be their game. This game is really important, of course, but it's three points like every other game is three points.'
Bompastor told the media there are no fresh injury concerns ahead of Manchester City following our midweek match in Glasgow. She also provided an update on defender Niamh Charles, who is back in training after sustaining a dislocated shoulder in pre-season.
'Almost all the squad will be available,' Bompastor said. 'We could rest some players for the midweek game against Celtic and all of them are available for the game tomorrow.
'Niamh is now almost back practicing normally with us. She's still a little bit protected with her shoulder, but she's advanced in her process and she's doing really good. Maybe, next week she will be able to be involved with the squad.'
