Sonia Bompastor has praised the almost telepathic understanding developing between Lexi Potter and Keira Walsh, believing their connection is helping Chelsea build from midfield.

Knowing where your team-mate will be before you look up is a valuable quality for any midfielder. In Potter and Walsh, Bompastor sees a pair whose awareness of one another is already making an impression.

Our Academy graduate has the opportunity to learn alongside one of the world’s best midfielders, and the Chelsea head coach believes their partnership is bringing the best out of their shared confidence on the ball.

‘They have a great connection together,’ Bompastor explained. ‘They understand each other, and even when they are on the pitch and they close their eyes, they know where each other are. So it’s really good.

‘I think they are both really strong and confident with the ball. It’s good to have two players in those positions who are able to bring the ball higher up the pitch and help the team to build up.

‘As I said, I think Lexi is doing well. Keira is a really important player as well for us, the way we want to play and the impact she brings into the game.’

That ability to move us forward is central to what Bompastor wants from her midfield. Walsh’s quality and experience make her an important figure in that approach, while Potter continues to show she can make a significant contribution of her own.

The youngster provided another example during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge, opening the scoring to set us on the way to three points.

Yet it is what Potter delivers from game to game, rather than any single moment, that has particularly impressed her head coach.

‘With Lexi being a young player, what I’m most impressed with is that she’s always consistent with her performances, and at this level, that’s really, really important,’ Bompastor continued.

‘She was able to score a great goal today, and she’s really performing well. She deserves to play.’
