Sonia Bompastor says she has seen plenty of evidence that Sam Kerr is building form and fitness and will soon be back to her very best.

The striker had good chances to score against Roma last night and though she did not take them, she still more than played her part in an emphatic home victory.

Bompastor has been gradually easing Kerr back into action in recent months following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, and that is the key reason why the head coach is unfazed by the Australian’s recent output.

‘It’s better for her confidence and the team’s confidence if she is able to score, but I know enough football to know it will take time for her to recover her best level,’ said Bompastor.

‘From her performance you could see she is getting closer to her best level: her movement and contribution in the team is better than when she just came back. She is working hard.

‘She has the right mentality and she is making all the effort to get to a point where she will contribute again by scoring goals and helping the team to perform. I’m not worried. It takes time, and I’m hoping for her and her confidence that will happen soon.’

One attacker who was not involved at all yesterday was Lauren James. Bompastor provided an update on the 24-year-old after she was left out of the matchday squad, confirming that will not be the case for this weekend’s visit to Brighton.

‘LJ is not injured, it’s more part of her management,’ detailed Bompastor.

‘Like Sam Kerr, Lauren James has been out for a long time. We are trying to manage her. This game was coming too soon for her to feature but she will be available for the game on Sunday.’
