Sonia Bompastor says she is proud of the performance her Chelsea side produced in our UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal, but admits a lack of ruthlessness cost the Blues a place in the last four.

Going into tonight’s contest at Stamford Bridge, a two-goal, first-leg deficit had to be overturned by Bompastor's side

We had the chances across the 90 minutes, with Sjoeke Nusken and Alyssa Thompson going close in the first half, and Lauren James, Veerle Buurman and Nusken again doing so in the second.

We eventually made the breakthrough – Nuksen firing home a Sam Kerr finish – but the goal came in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, too late to turn the tie around and our European campaign was ended after a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

‘At a human level, it’s tough,' Bompastor reflected in her post-match press conference. ‘When you analyse the performance tonight, we were in control of the game and had a good performance. Defensively, we corrected the issues we had in the first leg.

‘I don’t think Arsenal created a lot, except at the end of the game but were pushing hard to try to score and we left a lot more space on the pitch.

‘We were in control with the ball as well; we created a lot. In the first half, we could’ve scored three goals and we had big chances. The first half and the second half, the reality is we couldn’t score more than one. That is why we are not in the semi-finals.’

The Blues created the clearer chances across the two legs of our quarter-final tie, but came away with just two goals to show for our efforts.

A lack of clinical edge is something Bompastor has discussed regularly this season, and she accepts that it proved costly once more.

'I'm proud of them on the performance they put on the pitch, but it's the reality between one team being clinical, especially in the first leg, and us tonight not being clinical enough,' the Chelsea head coach explained.

'For me, that's the main reason why we didn't qualify for the semi-finals tonight. In possession of the ball, we were in control of the game – I think we created enough opportunities.

'The only difference is we couldn't score. We did at the end, but I think if you analyse the performance, we created three big chances in the first half, big enough for us at this level to be more clinical.

'It's probably been a little bit the story of our season.'
