Tonight Chelsea take on a Brighton and Hove Albion side that have not played for four weeks, while the Blues come into the WSL fixture off the back of our League Cup triumph in Bristol. Sonia Bompastor believes the relative benefits for each team balance themselves out.

The Seagulls defeated West Ham in the Women's FA Cup back on 22 February, a week after losing to the same side in the WSL. The international break followed and our scheduled game had to be put back because of our progression in the League Cup, meaning it has been a long wait for Brighton's players and Dario Vidosic – who is back in charge after a period of leave.

Bompastor expects them to be champing at the bit, therefore, while she hopes her side can pick up where they left off at Ashton Gate.

‘They will be coming into the game with fresh legs and desperate to play football again, and at the same time I feel we are in a really good run with a lot of momentum, so it’s 50/50,’ said Bompastor.

‘Brighton are a team who play really good football. Having their manager back will give them a boost in terms of confidence. They will be really motivated.

‘We know we will have to perform at a really good level if we want to win. We will be playing in front of our fans, we have good momentum after a good result on the weekend. So it will be a really interesting game.’

This is the first of three consecutive midweeks containing Chelsea fixtures, with a mouthwatering Champions League quarter-final tie against Arsenal to follow.

With league and FA Cup games as well, Bompastor is ready and waiting for what could prove a decisive chunk of the season.

‘We know we still have six games left in this block, and we want to take it game by game,’ said Bompastor.

‘We are so excited. When you are playing so many games, every three days, we know it's a really important part of the season for us.

‘We'll find the balance between focusing and analysing every opponent, and also focusing on ourselves. My job as a manager is to make sure I prepare my players in the best way possible for them to perform at their best level, and as a staff we know exactly what we need to provide to the players for them to be coming into every game with fresh legs.’
