Sonia Bompastor is looking for an instant response from Chelsea after dropping points at Liverpool when we host Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Although the Blues remain undefeated this season, we dropped points in the Women’s Super League for the second consecutive game on Sunday, when a 1-1 draw with Liverpool followed a stalemate with the same scoreline at Arsenal the previous week.

It was not the result we wanted, as we fight at the top of the table in what is already shaping up to be a tight title race, but it is how we react to that set-back which now has the attention of head coach Bompastor.

We have the chance to get back to winning ways quickly, and on the biggest of stages, when we look to continue our strong form in this season’s Women’s Champions League against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.

‘That’s crucial,’ said Bompastor. ‘At Chelsea we are used to bouncing back really quickly.

‘This is a busy period, we knew that it would be. We are finishing this block of games with this Champions League game against Barca.

‘It will be a tough challenge but our job is to make sure we focus on the next one. We take the learnings from Sunday and we go into the next one ready to compete.’

In both those WSL draws against Liverpool and Arsenal, we took the lead early on through fine goals by Alyssa Thompson.

The American winger is starting to show her quality with the Blues following her summer move from Angel City, earning praise from Bompastor after her latest impressive performance.

She said: ‘I think she has the quality to go outside, inside, to take shots from distance. Her technical ability is high, she is able to dribble one-v-one, to create a lot, so on Sunday again she was able to help the team to perform.

‘The goal was really important, so I’m happy with the performance that she’s having with us right now.’

Also at Liverpool, Blues captain Millie Bright made her 211th WSL appearance, taking her clear of Jordan Nobbs’ previous all-time record for the most games played in that competition.

‘It’s an incredible achievement,’ added Bompastor. ‘We would have wished to celebrate that but it is difficult when you tie the game.

‘Again, a big achievement from her, we know how good she is on the pitch and off the pitch. So I’m glad she achieved that and we’ll celebrate maybe a little bit later.’

Hopefully Bompastor, Bright and the rest of the Chelsea squad have plenty of reasons to celebrate come the final whistle at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
