Sonia Bompastor believes seizing control of the game and showing our quality in tight spaces will be key to taking all three points when we travel to Leicester City in the Women’s Super League.
Chelsea head to the King Power Stadium tomorrow for a 2.30pm kick-off, in what is our penultimate WSL fixture of the season and final away trip of the 2025/26 campaign.
There is still a lot to play for in the Blues camp, as we sit second in the table, knowing victory on Sunday will guarantee us a spot in the top three and UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification next season, while we also have a Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley to look forward to.
However, Leicester know they are already certain to finish bottom of the WSL table and face a relegation/promotion play-off against the third-placed side from WSL 2, and are still looking to pick up their first point of 2026, having suffered a painful 7-0 defeat to Arsenal in their last match.
‘I watched the game [against Arsenal] and it's tough for them right now,’ said Bompastor, ahead of Sunday’s match. ‘They are not in a really good run of games. Their dynamic in terms of results is not great.
‘They know they are going to play the play-off game so, in terms of confidence, that's probably not the best as well. But all these things being said, we need to focus on ourselves.
‘We want to win every game until the end of the season. This one is no different from the other ones. It's important for us to win. That's part of our mentality, our DNA, and we'll focus on ourselves as well.
‘In football, you never have an easy game. You need to make sure you go into every game with the right mentality. Every team in this league is difficult to play against and I'm not expecting something different on Sunday.’
The Foxes were certainly no pushover when we met them earlier in the season at Kingsmeadow. Aggie Beever-Jones’ early goal may have given us a 1-0 win, but the scoreline was narrower than Bompastor would have liked after Leicester proved to be stubborn opposition who were tough to break down.
‘We faced at that time a really low block, a really compact block which was aggressive and defending well, they were really well organised,’ the Chelsea head coach recalled.
‘We had many chances in that game. We couldn't score more than one goal, which has been maybe the story in some of our games this season.
‘We are in a better place right now. We are creating more chances, we are scoring more goals. So I'm expecting the team to be able to do the same this weekend.
‘We need to make sure we focus on our performance, being able to play in tight spaces, being able to control the ball, to have a high technicality and to take chances from distance as well.’
The message from Sonia is clear then. Avoid complacency, take our chances and, most importantly, secure the crucial three points needed to book our place in next season’s Champions League.
