Sonia Bompastor has her sights firmly set on victory in our final Women’s Super League fixture of the season, to send the team and supporters into the summer happy and give us the chance of sealing second place in the table.

Chelsea Women will take to the pitch one last time in 2025/26, when we host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

We are guaranteed to finish at least third in the WSL table, meaning our participation in next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League at some stage is certain, but need to finish second to skip the qualifying rounds and head directly to the league phase.

The Blues go into our last game two points behind second-placed Arsenal, meaning we must beat Manchester United and hope the Gunners slip up at Liverpool to have a chance of overtaking them on the final day.

‘It’s a big game again which we are all excited to play,’ said Bompastor, speaking to the media in her final pre-match press conference at Cobham of 2025/26.

‘I think it’s an important game for us, we can still take the second place in the league and I think we want to finish as high as we can and we want to finish with a win. It will be a tough game but that’s the mentality that we have going into this last one.

‘That’s really important. Our job is to make sure we go into the game tomorrow with the best chance to win.

‘We are not in control of the situation and the scenario, but there is still a game and our job is to focus on ourselves, make sure we win the game to have this opportunity if maybe Arsenal doesn’t get the points. That’s the only thing we have in mind, making sure we stay professional until the end of the season, the last result in the season.

‘That’s the mentality we have going into the game tomorrow because finishing second is a really different place than finishing third. Obviously for the club it’s really important to be qualified for the Champions League but not to have to play the qualification in August. It’s a big difference.’

Although our opponents have nothing left to play for, knowing they will end the season fourth no matter what happens on Saturday, Bompastor anticipates them arriving at the Bridge just as determined to go into the summer break on the back of a win as the Blues are.

‘I’m expecting them to come and be strong,’ added Sonia. ‘No-one wants to finish after losing a game so they are playing an important game as well in terms of they are playing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, they want to make sure they play as well as possible and get a good result.

‘So they will do their best and they have quality in their squad in individual players to perform at a good level. We know that but we also have a lot of quality in our squad and we want to make sure we give in the last game everything we have to finish on a high.’
