Sonia Bompastor has highlighted the impact – and importance – Alyssa Thompson is having on the Chelsea side, ahead of Sunday’s WSL clash with Liverpool at Kingsmeadow.
The American international arrived at Chelsea in September, making the switch from Angel City in her hometown of Los Angeles, and has established herself as a key component of Bompastor’s arsenal.
Thompson is an attack-minded forward player, but she is also comfortable at filling in at other roles, something that Bompastor appreciates in her players and has been impressed with Thompson’s recent form in front of goal.
Our no.12 has netted four goals in her last five outings and Bompastor is confident that the American can continue to have an impact when we host Liverpool in the WSL on Sunday afternoon.
‘Alyssa has been an important player for us,’ Bompastor said of our American international. ‘She's been performing at a really good level.
‘I think it's good to have her and it’s important that she can step in [to a number of positions]. Since she joined the club, she settled in really well and quickly – and I think she's showing her qualities on the pitch.
‘It's always important for a manager to have a player who can be ruthless in terms of scoring goals, and is being efficient in those offensive areas.
‘That's important for her individually, for her confidence, but also for the team. I think right now what sets apart a really top team is that ability to score lots of goals and kill games off.
‘It’s important to have players who are able to do that, and Alyssa is certainly in that bracket.’
