It’s fourth versus 16th in the Premier League as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea head to Dorset for our fifth visit to Dean Court in the top flight.

The Blues are looking to end a two-game losing streak against the Cherries, who beat us 1-0 back in December courtesy of a VAR-awarded goal.

When and where

The match takes place on Saturday 29 February at 3pm at the Vitality Stadium. It is our first Saturday 3pm game on the road since mid-September.

Bouncing back

The boss described our 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich in midweek as ‘a harsh lesson’ for his players in elite-level football and he will demand a reaction from them as we look to maintain our position in the Premier League top four.

Lampard is likely to be asked about how the group have responded in training and what he expects to see when we return to action at the Vitality Stadium.

Learning lessons

The Blues were beaten by a late goal when the two sides met in SW6 back in December, with a frustrating afternoon spent struggling to break through a resilient Bournemouth backline compounded by a home defeat.

Eddie Howe’s side have enjoyed a fair amount of success against us in recent seasons, winning three of our last four league meetings, and the journalists present may look to press Lampard on what his side need to do differently in order to return to winning ways.

Differences in VAR at home and abroad

There was more head scratching at VAR throughout the Premier League last weekend, with PGMOL quickly speaking out to admit a mistake had been made when Giovani Lo Celso was allowed to continue playing after a late stamp on Cesar Azpilucueta in our game against Tottenham. Elsewhere, more confusion led to renewed calls for the system to be reviewed or even scrapped altogether.

However, the technology seems to be operated far more successfully in European competition, with the pitchside monitor used at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night and games affected less by the long delays that have irritated many in the Premier League.

With that in mind, and given Lampard’s public criticism of VAR last weekend, the boss could be questioned on what English football can learn from officials in Europe.

Tammy's fitness

After reports of our number nine moving gingerely in the post-match warm-down at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, Lampard will be asked to provide an update on Tammy Abraham's fitness. The striker has struggled to shake off the ankle injury sustained against Arsenal, thereby opening the door for Olivier Giroud to start the past two matches.

Latest Chelsea team news

N’Golo Kante is likely to remain sidelined after the groin injury he picked up against Manchester United last week, while Christian Pulisic remains a doubt after Lampard recently revealed the USA international was suffering with ‘a difficult injury’.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has not featured since the start of the month but has been getting closer to fitness, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains in contention to play his first competitive minutes since last May.

Lampard has a choice to make on whether to stick with the 3-4-2-1 system deployed in recent games against Tottenham and Bayern Munich, or revert to the four-man defence used throughout most of the campaign.

Latest Bournemouth team news

Former Blue Nathan Ake missed the Cherries’ defeat at Burnley last weekend after suffering from concussion following a kick to the head in training in the build-up, though the Dutchman is expected to be back to line up against the club he spent six years with from 2011 to 2017.

David Brooks and Charlie Daniels, who both scored when Bournemouth beat us 4-0 last January, will be unavailable with ankle and knee injuries respectively. Chris Mepham is also a long-term absentee, though Jefferson Lerma could return.
