Millie Bright has urged her side to keep their momentum following a stunning 8-0 victory over Bristol City, bringing the Blues back into the WSL title race during Emma Hayes, Maren Mjelde and Fran Kirby’s final match at Kingsmeadow.

Guro Reiten’s four-goal display put Chelsea in the driving seat before Aggie Beever-Jones grabbed a brace, while Sjoeke Nusken and Niamh Charles would go on to complete the scoring for the dominant Blues.

Skipper Bright - who helped maintain a solid foundation upon which the Blues’ attacking talent built - was pleased with the victory, pointing to the three departing members of her 'Chelsea family' as key motivating factors.

‘As a group of players and staff, we are a family and we always have been and that’s why players stay at this club for long periods of time,’ Bright explained.

‘Especially the culture that Emma [Hayes] has built and everybody loves playing for Chelsea, not only for the club, but for the people. This win meant more than just the title race, today was for them and we want to send them out on the highest of the highs.

‘It’s been a tough season so far for different reasons so we really want to finish on a high and give them the send-off they deserve.’

With the victory having brought Chelsea within three points of Manchester City – with a game in hand – at the top of the WSL table, Bright described the group’s mentality heading into the final two matches of the season.

‘It’s all about controlling what we can control and that’s something that Emma has told us in every game,’ she continued.

‘We can control our performance, our energy levels, the way we address the game, go into it and ultimately we are professionals. We knew what we needed to do, we knew we needed to get the goals and we were given an opportunity with City’s loss earlier putting us in a great position – we’re fully back in it.

‘I think today couldn’t have gone any better in terms of getting the goals in the back of the net. We believe in what we are doing and we believe in each other. We know our qualities as a team and when we are on our A game, which I don’t think we have been recently which has been the hardest thing.

‘We have been trying so hard recently and it’s just not been working so after some huge losses we got together and it shows the spirit of the team and how together we are. We 100 per cent believe in each other all the way.’

The captain’s final words were saved for the supporters at Kingsmeadow and around the world.

Millie added: ‘They are so important. I hope the fans understand how important they are to us and how influential they can be on the game. I think today every single player used every ounce of energy after an exhausting period mentally and physically.

‘To come out here today, the fans really helped us get over the line. We could hear them saying they want eight or the next goal, and it does spur you on. They are absolutely so important to us and we need them for the next two games.’
