Subramanian Gourishankar from the Chelsea Supporters Club in Atlanta shares his story of watching the Blues defeat Club America 3-0 in his hometown...

I’ve been part of the Atlanta Blues group ever since I moved to Atlanta in 2018, it’s a very fun club. We meet regularly at a local bar, sing all the Chelsea songs, wave the Chelsea flags. This is one opportunity where we all meet at the stadium, sit together, scream and banter at the players. So it’s good fun and I would never miss this opportunity.

This is the third straight year Chelsea has visited America. In 2022 a lot of us travelled all the way from Atlanta to Orlando to see all the events there. Last year they came here to Atlanta.

The Atlanta Chelsea Blues make an annual trip to London to watch the men’s and women’s teams, but not everyone can make that because of family and work commitments, so coming to Atlanta really helps those people watch the team.

It gives us an opportunity to flaunt our Chelsea jersey, try to get autographs, see the players in action up close. Also to meet our fellow supporters, not just from the Atlanta Blues but neighbouring states like the Nashville Blues and the Florida Blues. We even had one group coming all the way from St Louis, so it’s very exciting.

On the day of the game, the local Atlanta Chelsea Blues partnered with a beer garden to watch Gary Cahill. Unfortunately I couldn’t go but I spoke to some of my fellow Blues supporters and Cahill was there to answer some questions, and a mum and her son both won Chelsea jerseys, which is very cool.

I was waiting to meet all my Atlanta Blues supporters. They had a full march from the beer garden all the way to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Once I reached the stadium, I met all the other people because we’d not seen each other since the last Premier League game. So it was good to see them and we were planning more games to watch once the new season begins.

Everyone was pretty excited to see the Blues in action again. I was happy I could get there about an hour-and-a-half before the actual game and I could see the players warming up, Robert Sanchez waving to the fans, Ben Chilwell kicking some balls. We saw the new goalkeeper that we signed, Filip Jorgensen, also coming and warming up, so it was pretty cool and exciting to see all the players and the drills.

In the actual game, I liked the way we transitioned the ball and kept the ball moving forward. I liked the set-up, the build-up play. We were attacking a lot in the first half. It was pretty impressive to see all the action, particularly sitting in the supporters’ section, it was amazing.

I liked seeing how Christopher Nkunku was very involved. He was very attacking. I loved Marc Guiu, he reminded me and the other Atlanta supporters of the great Diego Costa, he’s very aggressive. This was the first game where we could see Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and he seemed to understand Enzo Maresca perfectly, obviously because they worked together before.

I thought Tosin Adarabioyo was very calm in the game, very strong defensively. Chilwell was phenomenal, it was good to see Nkunku back hungry and he’s been scoring in the pre-season games which is really good. Once he pairs up with Cole Palmer the goal scoring should be very fluid.

As I’ve already said Guiu and Dewsbury-Hall were good, and Reece James bossed the defence, so there was a lot to be excited about!
