Chelsea wing-back Ellie Carpenter started for the Matildas as they registered a 3-1 friendly win over Mexico on Tuesday morning at the Western Sydney Stadium.
Carpenter, who earned her 101st cap for Australia in this latest encounter, made plenty of her trademark runs down the right flank and helped to force an own goal for the Matildas' second strike after Alanna Kennedy broke the deadlock after midway through the first half.
Arsenal's Caitlin Foord completed the 3-1 win with a finish from a superb team move with 20 minutes to play as the Australians put to bed their disappointment over a last-minute defeat to the same opponent last week.
'We had a lot to work on from the last game,' said Carpenter after the match. 'Obviously had to work out how to beat their press. I think we dealt with that tonight most of the time; [there were] still some shaky moments, but that’s what friendlies are for.
'[Joe Montemurro] said these are the situations we are going to be put in, so we need to deal with it. Teams are going to pressure us if we want to play the way we want to play, which is with the ball. Just quicker touches, quicker ball movement. I think there’s a lot to improve on, but that’s a good base.'
