Chelsea can confirm Catarina Macario has today completed a move to NWSL side San Diego Wave.
Macario first joined the Blues in July 2023, making the switch from OL Lyonnes in France. The striker was handed the No.9 shirt, but had to wait to make her debut for the club, having arrived with a pre-existing injury.
She made an immediate impact when she debuted for Chelsea, scoring with her first touch after being introduced as a late substitute in a 4-0 win over Leicester City in March 2024.
The following weekend, Macario scored the only goal in an FA Cup victory at Everton. She contributed to our Women’s Super League title in Emma Hayes’ last season in charge with two goals and six assists in five starts and ten substitute appearances.
Blues fans will fondly remember her two penalties converted away at Real Madrid in the 2024/25 Women’s Champions League group stages, as she turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory in the Spanish capital.
Perhaps her finest moment at Chelsea was when she powered in a header at Wembley Stadium in last season’s Women’s FA Cup final, our second goal in a 3-0 win over Manchester United.
The American also scored a brace away at St Polten in this season’s league phase of the Champions League, but has since been absent because of injury.
Macario leaves Chelsea with 59 appearances and 15 goals, having won a WSL title in her first season with the club and a domestic Treble under Sonia Bompastor last term.
Everyone at Chelsea would like to sincerely thank Catarina for her contribution to our success, and we wish her well during the next chapter of her career back home in the United States.
