It’s been a long road back from injury for Catarina Macario. The forward was forced off early into Lyon's final game of the 2021/22 season and it was later discovered she had suffered a serious injury.
That ACL tear would keep her out for 22 months. Macario spent a whole season working on her rehabilitation with Lyon, and Chelsea swooped in to sign her at the end of that campaign.
It wasn’t until March of the following season that she made that long-awaited return to action. Following 641 days out, she scored in her comeback game, a 4-0 win over Leicester City.
That was a sign of things to come. This season Macario has contributed ten goals in all competitions and chipped in with multiple assists, despite often featuring from the bench.
‘After having been out for almost two years, I always want to keep improving, be available for the team and help in any way I can,’ the striker said prior to the FA Cup final.
‘I also need to be realistic and take the wins where I can. I've been available for every game since January, which is a big achievement for me after experiencing a lot of niggles here and there that have kept me off the pitch.
‘Doubling the number of appearances I made last season is a big win, but it's just the beginning.’
On Sunday, her powerful header put us 2-0 up against Manchester United with just six minutes of normal time remaining. The goal gave us the belief we had done enough to lift the cup, and in turn, complete a domestic Treble.
Her celebration told the story of her journey to that moment and our fans will be excited to hear the USA international believes she's only just getting started in a blue shirt.
‘There’s more to come from me,' Macario continues. 'I have had many conversations with the club and my coaches about where I want to go and what I need to do to be the best version of myself and help the team the most. There’s a lot of room for improvement in that regard.
‘I'm just someone who always has high expectations of myself. I'm sure the club has those expectations of me too, and for every player, for that matter.
‘This season has been about being realistic and getting a baseline in, being available and being back on the pitch, training with the team consistently without any modifications.
‘As much as I want to push and improve to reach my highest level, it’s not going to come from one day to the next. It’ll take time because I was out for two years. It’s about being patient, working hard and being consistent in the work. Eventually, things will start to make sense.’
The same drive pushing Macario to get back among the goals is sure to propel her to even bigger heights.
With a full pre-season schedule on the horizon, she's raring to go.
‘Even though I'm happy knowing I helped the team in certain instances, I’m still not satisfied,' she said. 'I know I have more to give to the team and the club and I'm looking forward to finishing the season on a high note.
‘I can’t wait for next season. I'll be working hard over the summer to come in for pre-season sharp, strong and to put my best foot forward. It will be my first full pre-season in a while. I'm eager for it and can't wait to get there.'
The memory of her FA Cup final goal is sure to motivate Cat even more and was an exciting glimpse of what more is to come.
