Trevoh Chalobah is the next subject of Unlocked, our exclusive video series getting to know the Blues squad better.

The defender sat down at Cobham to speak to us in depth about his life on and off the pitch. In a fascinating discussion, Trev talks about how he came late to football and had to overcome several hurdles before feeling confident in himself that he could make it in the game.

He reflects on his relationship with his brother Nathaniel, who also played for Chelsea and England, as well as the loan spells early in his career – including coming up against Neymar and Kylian Mbappe – that shaped the person and the player he has become.

Trevoh opens up on the importance of his faith, and how pilates helps him reset during testing times. He also looks back on the beginning of his senior Chelsea career, which ended with silverware on his debut and then, in the next game, a maiden Blues goal.

‘The Super Cup final was my first start,’ he says. ‘I remember being on the phone to my family and I was nervous, man. I was going to put on my boyhood club’s shirt and actually play in the final. I was very nervous but I had my family there to take the pressure off a bit.

‘They said to me to enjoy and that I was there for a reason. ‘You deserve it, you went through a lot, you have worked hard, this is the time to show yourself’. The moment I stepped on the pitch, I was calm.

‘After that I didn’t expect to start against Crystal Palace but I had obviously done well in the Super Cup. I was a bit nervous, first Premier League start, but I spoke to my family, I stepped on the pitch to enjoy it. At the end of the day it’s a game of football, you just have to relax and enjoy every moment.

‘Scoring in that game I will never forget. I will be able to tell my kids one day as well. It was an unbelievable moment. I have a lot of flashbacks of the hard times, the good times, and that was the moment where I felt I had finally done it. From watching my brother on TV put on the shirt, and now I had done it as well.’
