Malo Gusto is the next Chelsea player to sit in front of the cameras in Unlocked, our exclusive video series getting to know the Blues squad better.
The Frenchman sat down at Cobham for a half-an-hour chat in which he discussed life on and off the pitch.
Malo details how he came to football relatively late as a young boy growing up on the outskirts of Lyon, initially trying his hand at rugby. He reflects on his decision to join Chelsea and the positive relationship he enjoys with fellow right-back Reece James.
The 22-year-old also explains his love of fashion, while when the focus is on football, he speaks in depth about the versatility he brings to the side. Malo has played in both full-back positions, in midfield and even on the right flank in an attacking position. Such adaptability has long been in his blood.
‘Every position that I can play I will always be doing something,’ Malo says. ‘I’m not saying I will become the best left winger in the world if I’m playing left winger, but I know I will be doing great anyway.
‘Even when I was young and watching football and starting to understand football, I was not watching only my position. I was watching every position, every player, trying to understand the game as much as possible. This is something really important to be a complete player. You have to do great in every position you can play.
‘I’m playing to become the best player in my position, the best right-back in the world. If you’re playing football just to be a good player, it’s because you don’t have a lot of ambition. I joined Chelsea and I want even more in terms of performance. It’s just the beginning.’
