Reece James is the latest subject of Unlocked, our exclusive video series exploring the person behind the player.

In a broad and fascinating 30-minute conversation at Cobham, our skipper discusses a host of topics about his life on and off the pitch.

Reece, who has been at Chelsea since he was a little boy and is now in his third season as Blues captain, recounts tales of growing up with football in the family. His sister Lauren is a star of our Women’s team and his brother Josh was also a very good footballer, while father Nigel had a significant impact on his schooling in the game.

Reece also talks about how he likes to spend time away from the field of play – including collecting art and watches – before the focus turns to leading Chelsea, learning from other sportspeople and understanding what his body requires.

‘The more games you play, the more you adapt,' he said.

‘When I first got onto the scene, there wasn’t much of a routine, I wouldn’t say. As I have got older and learned and understood my body more, I’ve tried things and learned, ‘I don’t really like this, I don’t feel good when I do this’.

‘You keep on chipping away to find things you like and you think help. Then you have a structure. I’m at a point now where I have that. I’ve found what I like, what I think works, and what doesn’t, and I focus on that.’

You can watch the full episode with Reece above, in which he also analyses the merits of his versatility and looks back on our Club World Cup triumph.
