The 2019/20 Champions League campaign will resume in August, it was announced by UEFA in a statement today (Wednesday).
Chelsea’s trip to Bayern Munich for the second leg of the round of 16 tie, originally scheduled for mid-March, had been postponed because of the spread of COVID-19 throughout Europe. The Blues currently trail 3-0 after the first leg.
The remaining round of 16 matches will now be played on 7 or 8 August, pending a decision on whether they will take place at the home team’s stadium or in Portugal.
UEFA also announced plans to complete the remainder of the competition as a final eight straight knockout tournament over an 11-day period in Lisbon from 12 to 23 August.
The UEFA executive committee confirmed the 2020/21 Champions League group campaign would begin on 20 October and new dates were also set for the postponed Euro 2020 finals, which will now take place next summer.
