A late goal from Niamh Charles helped Chelsea go on to secure an extra-time League Cup quarter-final victory against Manchester City last season and the youngster is excited for another cup clash against the Manchester side.

It was a goal of the highest standard from Charles which helped to secure a place in the League Cup semi-final before Chelsea went on to lift the trophy.

With a place in the FA Cup final up for grabs this afternoon, today’s semi-final clash, which is away from home, is sure to be another dramatic encounter.

‘We are really looking forward to it,’ said Charles. ‘These are the games you want to be involved in.

‘It’s a quick turnaround but that’s what we all train for so that we can come back and switch our focus quickly to City.

‘It’s going to be exciting to have the fans back as well. It always a great game between us and City and I’m sure the game will deliver.’

Today’s opponents have been hit with a lengthy injury list which has hindered their start to the league campaign, but Charles is wary of the threat the Blues are coming up against this afternoon.

She added: ‘Cup games are standalone games and every game feels like a final when you get to the knockout stages.

‘They [City] have had a tough run with injuries but they’ve got more than enough quality, no matter who plays, to hurt any team.

‘We respect how good they are, and we won’t be going there and expecting it to be any easier than any other time. It’s always tough to go there with their home crowd so we will be prepared for a strong City side.’

Today’s clash against Manchester City kicks-off at 12.45pm and is available to watch live on BBC One. Text commentary will be on chelseafc.com and The 5th Stand app.
