Niamh Charles and Aggie Beever-Jones have returned home to England with the rest of the Women’s Euro 2025-winning squad to a reception at Buckingham Palace.

Charles played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring her spot-kick in the shoot-out against Spain in the final, and the Blues defender explained how being on the pitch for the decisive penalties during the quarter-final win over Sweden helped her prepare for that pivotal moment.

‘It was stressful, as has been almost every game, but to end it like that was unbelievable,’ said Charles. ‘I was on the pitch for the last game when it went to penalties, but I never took one, so I experienced it in that way a little bit.

'Then we worked really hard on our penalty process, and thankfully, I just stuck to that and managed to block everything else out.

‘The way we do it is you just get told, and that’s how it went. We’ve experienced the whole tournament over 120 minutes, and we had this complete belief that no matter how late it went, how long it went, we knew that we always had a moment in us. We always had that fighting spirit, and we’ve referenced it so much, but it is proper English.’

Charles appeared in five of the Lionesses’ matches during the tournament, playing 78 minutes in total.

The defender emphasised the importance of the entire squad in achieving this summer’s triumph in Switzerland and detailed why clinching that win was so important.

‘Everyone has had a moment and a part to play,’ Charles continued. ‘That makes me so proud because from the start, everyone deserves this, from the staff to the players.

‘Whenever you win, it’s going to be a fairytale, but the way this tournament has gone, it’s been so, so dramatic and we’ve had to fight for literally everything. It doesn’t get more special than that in sport’s biggest moments. Those are the moments you dream about and make you feel alive.’

Another Chelsea player who contributed to England’s victory was striker Aggie Beever-Jones. The Blues Academy product turned 22 on the day of the final, having scored and provided an assist in her 74 minutes of action.

‘I’ll never have a better birthday than that!’ she grinned afterwards. ‘Being back-to-back champions is absolutely incredible, one of the best experiences of my life.

‘I can’t stop smiling, and can’t wait to celebrate with everyone – my family and all the fans.

‘It’s definitely going to be a day to remember forever.’
