Our countdown to Christmas continues on the 13th day of December as we host Everton at Stamford Bridge, with our latest advent feature focusing on some iconic memories from previous meetings with the Toffees.
Everton have been one of our most frequent opponents over the course of our history, not least because of their status as a fellow ever-present Premier League side.
It is that era we have focused on in this selection of 13 memorable moments from games at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park – let’s hope another follows today!
Zola’s first Chelsea goal | December 1996
Gianfranco Zola’s first Chelsea goal was a sign of things to come. Standing over a free-kick 35 yards out, few would have given him a chance of finding the net – but we didn’t know then quite how capable he was from set-pieces.
His strike had whip and dip, leaving Everton’s keeper Neville Southall and a defender who had hastily retreated to the line in a spin, and Chelsea mouths a gasp.
Zola’s last Chelsea goal | April 2003
Zola finished as he started. Just as his first Chelsea goal had the Bridge faithful in awe, so did his last. With Chelsea cruising against Everton in our quest to finish in the top four, Zola raced down the left and, from an improbable angle, lofted the bouncing ball over Richard Wright in the Everton goal.
It was the kind of moment of magic Zola had deservedly earned a reputation as producing on a regular basis.
Robben sends Chelsea top | November 2004
Arjen Robben’s Chelsea career was just catching fire when his eye-catching goal sent the Blues top for the first time in our 2004/05 title-winning campaign.
Inflicting a first away league defeat on the Toffees was hard work, and it needed a moment of brilliance from Robben with 18 minutes left to breach the dam. He sprinted on to Gudjohnsen’s incisive long pass and cutely dinked the ball over the onrushing Nigel Martyn.
Drogba from distance | December 2006
An end-to-end encounter at Goodison Park saw Chelsea trailing 2-1 with ten minutes remaining, before Frank Lampard levelled with a serving strike.
There was one more incredible twist to come, though, three minutes from time. Everton probably didn’t think they were in much danger when Andriy Shevchenko nodded Hilario’s long kick to Drogba 30 yards out, but he promptly turned and unleashed an unstoppable half-volley which dipped perfectly to leave the keeper pawing at thin air.
Small man with a big leap | January 2008
Time was ticking down in the first leg of our League Cup semi-final against Everton at Stamford Bridge when the smallest man on the pitch – Shaun Wright-Phillips – improbably forced a dramatic winner.
A deflected cross hung in the air and though coming up against the significantly taller Joleon Lescott, SWP leaped highest and forced the Toffees defender to head into his own net in the second minute of stoppage time.
Super Frank’s cup decider | 2009 FA Cup final
With the score level at 1-1 in the 2009 FA Cup final, the ever-reliable Frank Lampard put Chelsea into the lead with less than 20 minutes left on the clock with a stunning long-range hit.
To celebrate the important strike, the Blues' all-time top goalscorer rounded the corner flag just like his father did when he also scored against the Toffees in the 1980 semi-final. It was meant to be!
Lampard leaves it late | February 2014
Lampard’s penultimate Chelsea goal was an inswinging free-kick that somehow found its way in as John Terry pressured Tim Howard into an error.
More pertinently, it arrived in stoppage time and sealed a 1-0 win over Everton that kept us top of the table. It was also the first of three successive result-changing late goals against the Toffees in SW6.
Everton 3-6 Chelsea | August 2014
An absolutely bonkers game, this one! The Blues raced into a two-goal lead inside three minutes courtesy of Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic, but our hosts wouldn’t go away.
At various points they reduced the score to 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 Chelsea before we finally pulled away, Diego Costa scoring our sixth goal of an extraordinary encounter in the 90th minute.
Bedlam at the Bridge | February 2015
Time was once more running out as Everton, who had chances of their own, looked set to leave London with a goalless draw and a hard-fought point.
Willian had other ideas, though. The ball fell to him on the edge of the box in the 89th minute and the low strike that followed took a slight deflection to beat Howard, spark pandemonium inside the Bridge and maintain our seven-point advantage at the top of the table.
JT preserves unbeaten record | January 2016
Yet more late drama! This time, it looked like our long run without losing at home to Everton in the league – dating back to 1994 – was coming to an end when Ramiro Funes Mori put the Toffees 3-2 up in the 90th minute.
However, a clearly offside John Terry backheeled in an equaliser in the eighth minute of added time in front of the Matthew Harding Stand, preserving our unbeaten record in dramatic fashion.
The complete display | November 2016
There have been few finer Premier League performances from Chelsea than this 5-0 win over Everton at the Bridge on Bonfire Night 2016 in our most recent title-winning campaign.
Eden Hazard led the charge against a mesmerised Toffees, with our brilliant Belgian netting twice. Marcos Alonso scored his first in Blue and there were also goals for fellow Spanish internationals Diego Costa and Pedro. The Toffees didn’t muster a shot on target.
Pedro’s rocket | April 2017
In the reverse fixture later that season, and with the Blues closing in on the title, we were struggling to break down a dogged Everton rearguard before Pedro conjured up a moment of magic.
The winger launched a left-footed long-range strike into the top corner midway through the second half, setting us on our way to a 3-0 success at Goodison Park.
Perfect Palmer | April 2024
Everton’s visit to the Bridge in April last year was dominated by the brilliant Cole Palmer, who scored a perfect hat-trick in the first half and then added to his tally with a penalty after the break.
Having already scored with his left foot and then a close-range header, Palmer completed his treble in style, deftly lobbing Jordan Pickford from range after the Evertonian keeper had come out of his goal.
